1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee/ 4.0 / Automatic / 4x4 / 6 cyl / 42RE Transmission. I am new to this forum and I very much hope that somebody will have a useful answer for me. When I start the car, the shifting works fine for about 100 - 300 Yards.

After that it stays 3th gear. If I want the shifting to work, I need to switch of the car and restart. The problem remains with cold or warm engine. I have a Rebuild transmission and Transfer Case ( from Transmission Part Distribution Inc. ) that worked fine for about 2000 Miles. I have replaced my ECM / PCM for about 3000 miles ago.

Personally, if the 42RE and NP249 failed and I also wanted a manual transmission. My 1999 XJ Cherokee is extremely reliable and easier to service than a ZJ, and these XJs. When the problem started I checked my Transmission Oil and had my Governor Pressure Switch replaced. I have spend a lot of money on parts for this Jeep ( replaced suspension Parts/ Replaced Master Brake and Brake Sensors / Other sensors / Radiator / Fluid and power steering containers/ Airco Condenser and Compressor/ Gabriel off road Shocks/ Sound system/ Interrior decorating/ New Tires and so on) and the car drives fantastic(like new), if not for this shifting problem. Hope that somebody (.

The only governor in your vehicle is inside the transmission and non-servicable without teardown. Slipping is a product of low pressure usually due to internal wear and seal failure. Do a trans fluid change.

If the fluid is very black and there is a substantial amount of debris inside pan and on filter, it may be a lost cause. To buy a bit more time, the only additive I've ever had any luck with is made by lucas oil products. Follow directions on bottle. If it works better after that, Change again in about 2 weeks. Or you have a idle air control valve or TPS going bad, then repair codes by replacing failed sensor or shift control solenoid as needed. If no codes are present your transmission could have a internal failure. It's also been know that oil transmission fluid in the system will have a higher fluid retention causing the 2nd gear solenoid to stick causing the transmission to stay in second till the line pressure rises and drops back to first with a hard shift. Keep me posted be glad to get your transmission running again.

Believe it or not, pouring through Dodge Trucks / Jeep 42RE A500SE Transmission Rebuild Repair Manual brought back a few sweet memories. As big fans of the Grand Cherokee, we have a special place in our hearts for the 42RE tranny. We had a good time putting that baby through its paces, pushing its four auto speeds into some serious challenges. It had a brand new governor body and a redesigned hydraulic system. (No, we’re not professional transmission mechanics, but we like to read up on our vehicles.) We knew the 3-4 shift was activated by an electronic shift in the solenoid, while the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts was channeled into the governor pressure circuit from the solenoid.

Despite all this knowledge, we knew better than to touch a single component in that tranny. But we have to admit, we might have been a little bolder if we’d had a copy of Dodge Trucks / Jeep 42RE A500SE Transmission Rebuild Repair Manual. Engineered for any and every professional that has to work with this unique machine, the technical service information to be found in these 120 pages is going to simplify all your operations.
