General Motors has revealed the redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2015 GMC Sierra HD model series, its lineup of heavy-duty work trucks. According to the automaker, the new trucks deliver what it claims is the highest payload rating of any truck at 7,374 lbs., as well as the highest conventional tow rating of 19,600 lbs. Buyers seeking to tow a 5th-wheel trailer will be able to pull 23,200 lbs.

With the new Silverado HD and Sierra HD models, which represents a 700-lb. Increase over the outgoing models. The new and heavy-duty trucks will be sold in 2500HD and 3500HD model series, and in familiar trim levels ranging from a basic Work Truck to a luxu riously appointed Denali version of the GMC. Regardless of the buyer's selection, GM promises up to 150 different combinations of cab, bed length, powertrain, drivetrain, and axle ratios, allowing customers to build 'exactly the right truck' for their needs. Exterior styling is modeled upon the that debuted for the 2014 model year, and the new Silverado HD and Sierra HD offer improved aerodynamics and upgraded engine cooling capabilities. Regular, new Double, and continuing Crew Cab models are available, with regular 6.5-ft. The standard engine is a 6.0-liter V-8 making 360 horsepower in 2500HD models and 322 horsepower in 3500HD models, while both versions of the truck benefit from 380 lb.-ft of torque peaking at 4,200 rpm.

This E85-compatible engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a tow/haul mode, and is designed as a bi-fuel engine that can operate on compressed natural gas (CNG). The optional 6.6-liter, Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 engine makes 397 horsepower and 765 lb.-ft. Of torque, the latter peaking at just 1,600 rpm, and is designed to run on B20 bio-diesel. An Allison 1000 transmission is standard, and it includes Driver Shift Control and tow/haul modes.

The Duramax diesel requires Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) refills every 5,000 miles, and the engine is equipped with an elevated idle warm-up feature that is useful in cold weather climates. Both the Silverado HD and the Sierra HD come with free scheduled maintenance during the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of ownership. Trailer sway control and hill-start assist are standard, even on dual-rear-wheel models, and the trucks are offered with an optional Integrated Brake Controller, with a Gain display in the instrument cluster. Additionally, for 2015, the available cruise control, automatic grade braking, and for diesel models, diesel exhaust braking systems, are integrated with one another. Effectively, the driver sets a desired speed and these systems maintain it regardless of terrain. The transmission's tow/haul driving mode is used to manually activate Auto Grade Braking, and a Diesel Exhaust Brake switch allows the driver to manually operate that feature.

In addition, the new Silverado HD and Sierra HD trucks employ stiffer and stronger frames, a unique independent front suspension tuned for individual truck weight ratings and designed for easier adjustment for front-mounted accessories, and asymmetrical rear leaf springs. A Z71 off-road suspension with skid plates and other equipment is optional. Cargo boxes are constructed of rolled-form steel for strength and lighter weight, and offer a 2-tiered design. Corner Step rear bumpers are standard, and the trucks can be optioned with an EZ Lift tailgate, upper tie-down hooks (sta ndard for GMC), LED under-rail bed lighting, and a spray-in bedliner.

All versions of the redesigned 2015 Silverado HD and Sierra HD feature inlaid doors and triple door seals to help make the trucks more aerodynamic and quieter inside. In addition to Regular Cab and Crew Cab versions, the latter equipped with wider rear doors for 2015, a new Double Cab model with conventionally hinged rear doors and a center roof pillar replaces the previous Extended Cab body style that used a clamshell door design. Inside, the interiors are modeled after those installed in the 1500-series trucks, and they feature increased cab room and comfort levels, as well as a choice between high-wear cloth and leather seating materials.

Chevrolet and GMC promise that the truck's controls are easy to operate while wearing work gloves, and all versions except the basic Work Truck models include Chevrolet MyLink or GMC IntelliLink touch-screen infotainment systems with Bluetooth connectivity, Pandora Internet radio, and more. A navigation system is optional. For the most luxurious version of the new heavy-duty trucks from General Motors, choose the 2015 GMC Sierra HD Denali model. It adds a unique exterior appearance, upgraded interior with soft-touch surfaces and real aluminum trim, leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and more. This model also has an exclusive 8-inch information display that the driver can customize, as well as an IntelliLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, 5 USB ports, an SD card slot, and a Bose premium audio system.

General Motors also improves safety for its new heavy-duty pickups. In addition to 6 standard air bags, including side-impact and side curtain air bags, the Silverado HD and the Sierra HD are offered with a reversing camera, forward-collision alert system, lane-departure warning system, Active Safety Seat, and front and rear park-assist sensors. Once these new heavy-duty trucks start rolling off assembly lines in Michigan and Indiana, they will go on sale during the first quarter of 2014. Additional information, including prices, will be available closer to that time.

Asked by Ken Feb 21, 2017 at 02:36 PM about the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ Crew Cab 4WD Question type: General I am totally confused when doing research on what I can tow with my truck. What is the max king pin weight? I am told 18,000 total weight but when you look at calculators and subtract the weight in the truck and passengers (4), it calculates only a 9K - 12K 5th wheel max weight and our 5th wheel we bought is 13,400 dry. How do these trucks have the ability to pull 18K?

Again, I don't think I'm an idiot but I just cant figure this out! What am I missing? Tallpines1 answered about a year ago Hi Ken, I appreciate your question as my husband and I are having the same problem. We have the same truck as you except we have the 8' bed rather than the 6.5', and we are having a hard time determining what size 5th wheel toy hauler we can get. The 2016 Chevy towing guide says 12,900 but the 2015 trailering guide for our truck is 16,500.

Ken answered about a year ago I am really stumped because I thought this would be the place that could answer my questions but I guess not.:( Therefore, I have done my research and here is what I found out and please chime in if I am wrong! In my Chevrolet 2016 Duramax Diesel owners manual Supplement, page 65, 'Driving and Operating' section there is a table that gives you max trailer weight, max tongue weight and Gross Combination Weight Rating or GCWR. For this truck, the GCVR is 25,100 lbs. What that means is the total weight of the truck (including occupants), trailer (in this case 5th wheel) and all cargo in both the truck and the 5th wheel. My 5th wheel is 13,425 lb and my truck is about 7,300 lbs so that leaves me with about 4000 lbs give or take of cargo and people in the truck and the 5th Wheel. I know the 5th wheel is going to be a little hard on the suspension so I am going to install airlifts to help with towing. Tell me if I am wrong.
