After having a Vectra 1.9 cdti for many years and being very happy with it until it gave up the ghost, I decided to try the latest shape Astra Sri. I liked the design of the Astra and thought it was a very pretty car to look. Initially I was really impressed with the amazing build quality compared to the Vectra, with solid shutting doors and good choice of quality materials used inside. The cabin is a nice place to be if you spend a lot of time traveling. On driving you can feel how heavy this car is though at over 1,500kg and feels more sluggish than the Vectra. The electric power steering although still vague, is better than the Vectra and a quicker rack means the steering is more responsive.

The seats are very comfortable and supportive which is great for long distance driving. This car is a good motorway cruiser and eats up the miles very easily. I have read reports from some reviewers of excessive wind and road noise from this car, but maybe I have just been lucky as it is a lot quieter than my previous car. You can hear very little tyre roar and minimal wind noise, and is probably the quietist motorway vehicle I have had, meaning that the stereo (ICE) doesn't have to be very loud to hear it.

Good job I suppose as it isn't the best quality of stereos, it is adequate but could do with a little more stereo separation and frequency response for my taste. As it is an Sri model with firmer suspension and running 19' alloys, the ride can be hard at times on uneven roads, however on smoother twisty roads it comes into its own and has a fantastic chassis when pushed.

I think Vauxhall have worked very hard on this chassis and is probably the best they have designed yet, under steer has been reduced massively from previous models, which was always an issue with all Vauxhalls. Thankfully the traction and ESP have been programmed well and you actually have quite a lot of control over the car before the traction and ESP cuts in spoiling your day unlike other manufacturers! The electronic handbrake and hill start assist is a pointless gadget and once you get used to it, actually works ok but I would still choose the manual handbrake model over this anytime. The cabin space and storage flexibility is really good and although the boot space a bit smaller than the Vectra the rest of the family space is pretty much the same and good for an everyday family mode of transport. The only downside with this car is the engine. The 1.7cdti comes in many guises, and this one happens to be the 110ps model, which is woefully underpowered given the weight of the car, compared to the 125 and 130ps models.

There is no power until 2000 rpm then everything thrown at you until 4000rpm then basically nothing after that. This can be very dangerous when trying to pull away or rolling up to junctions, with no power on tap until the turbo spools up and just not very smooth when carrying passengers, due to the on/off characteristics of the power delivery.

Once it is up to speed and above 2000rpm it is graceful and quiet. The only way for me to over come this problem was to have the vehicle remapped, which gave a noticeable increase in torque and power and overcome the inherent turbo lag and lack of engine response, whilst being a lot smoother and quieter. This has turned the vehicle from a well put together comfortable car that was a little dangerous and disappointing to drive, into something that has an engine to match the looks and handling. The stated fuel economy figures on these engines are vastly over estimated.

However the mpg has got progressively better as the mileage has increased. Mpg has gradually increased from 45mpg to 52 mpg covering combined motorway and round town journeys. Notably though after being remapped the mpg has increased to 60.2mpg on average (calculated from full to empty tank, not from dash display), which is very near to manufacturers specs now.

The yearly road tax for the 1.7cdti is between £30-£110 depending on the engine year of manufacture and the insurance is very cheap. Overall a very good car, well built, with very minimal reliability issues and nice to drive, but if choosing the 1.7 engine go for the 130ps model with Bosch fuel injection rather than the lower powered 1.7 models with Denso fuel injection as these are known to be more unreliable. This is a fantastic car. Best thing is undoubtedly the power.

0-62 in 8.5s is fantastic. I've beaton BMW's away from the lights. Not mention this cars main rivals the Focus and Golf. If I'm honest this car is so much better than both the Focus and Golf and honestly I'd be tempted to sat its better than the BMW 1Series. Its hugely practical for a hatchback, actually quite hard to fill up.

And with the rear seats down its like an old Astravan! The seats are also nice and comfortable and in the rear even I still have plenty of head and leg-room and I'm 6'5. Thats with the front seat in the wifes posistion and she's 5'10. The car is also economical with around 56MPG on average. If I'm doing very pwered up high action driving then it will be about 45MPG which is still good.

We've had no trouble with it at all, very reliable probably becuase its built in Great Britain! With it being the elite model its very highly equiped and to be honest if someone offered me I'd keep this over a higher end BMW or Audi. The Astra also has a very upmarket feel its very smooth riding and has a high quality interior. Its also well built no rattles and no loose pieces of trim. As I'm sure you'll all agree as well its a brilliant looker.

To conclude: An excellent family car which I would recomend over any other on the market. THis is the best car I've driven in years. Thanks Vauxhall!! And to add to this even this model is cheaper than all rivals to buy!

The astra sri xp is a good looking, dependable, and on the whole rewarding car to drive. It does everything i ask of it, it can do long motorway journeys, short frequent town trips, and spirited country road driving with ease. The handling is good, the ride is generally fine for a car with 18' low profile tyres and sporty suspension, and there is plenty of performance to make swift progress and overtake if necessary. The interior is generally all fitted together very well and easy to keep clean and tidy, although it isn't completely free from the odd squeak or rattle. This car does not have as much storage space as most cars in its class (something that was evident from when it first came to market) but the relative lack of stowage space in the cabin doesn't really present me with any problems.

It is quite easy to find a good driving position and although these standard seats are fairly hard, they have enough comfort for a 3 or 4 hour drive. The only real downsides to this car is the economy - this car could really do with a 6th gear for cruising along the motorway. However, the 1.8 engine only has 5 gears which means that at motorway speeds the engine uses more fuel than it should do (something which was remedied with the new model). At this stage in my life, the car suits me very well and to date has been extremely reliable (bar one common electrical fault which was fixed under warranty). Couldn't ask for anything more from it.

No torque, no grip, massive under steer and gutless. I had a 2.0 NA Renault 182 that could demolish this pathetic car.

Expensive options list and next to no standard equipment and no way to add extra due to a locked CANBUS, this is bad for the second hand market (OK there are workarounds but that's not the point). MPG is worse than my MX-5, BMW 318 CI and Clio cup ever were - under normal driving;). Every time the car is left overnight the clutch will remain depressed, affecting the cruise control and gear change (clutch switch), I have to lift the pedal with my foot every time I release the handbrake. The anti roll back function is dangerous as it releases whenever it wishes, the auto handbrake is dangerous as it releases just by pressing the accelerator even when out of gear. A total mess and at worse a shambles. This car can't compare to an A3 or Golf, and the comment on a 1 Series - lol, I'd take a Kia over this, the Astra is RUBBISH.

I'll probably never buy a Vauxhall again! My Vauxhall Astra. The first word that springs to mind is, excellent! This car is fantastic, its very good. I do a lot of work with animals and have to do a lot of motorway driving, so I need good fuel economy and with the Astra its guranteed! I was originally looking for a 2.0 however they had none in stock as they sell quickly and are the best ones to get, but this engine seemed good so I purchased this one. The enigne is great, powerful enough and excellent fuel consumption!

Its also incredibly practical and versitile. Its also fun to drive! The build quality of this car is absoulutly stunning. Its so well screwed together and everything feels upmarket. The dash display, the quality, everything.

Carbuyer said the buttons were crowded, thats not true you get used to it as soon as you have the car. Its very reliable I have had no problems.

Overall this is an excellent I would recomend this over a Focus or a Golf. Well done Vauxhall!! Peeved that car was delivered with the cruise control not functioning. The dealer had missed a faulty switch on their pdi.

The car developed a misfire within first 100 miles. The dealer said it was a normal self clean function - though unusual at that mileage. No further problems in last 2k miles. It has a newly designed auto box but vauxhalls have missed a trick by not going for the dsg system.

The manual version lists 58 as combined cycle mpg whilst this auto lists 48. I drive fairly gently on a frequent 10 mile rural run but only achieve 41 mpg - a massive 30% reduction and due to the power sapping inefficiency of the auto box.

That said, 41 isn't bad considering the power available. It has a highish boot lip and i find no use for the flexi floor system. This car is a good replacement for my 07 bmw 320i auto tourer - tho' i miss the pin-point handling. But how glad i am to have fwd during the n york winter. We have done only 25,ooo approx, but nothing has gone wrong, the car is a superb motorway cruiser and surprises a lot of people in the rapidity of it`s acceleration and handling.

Fuel consumption 45 just on short trips when engine doesn`t get properly warm, but up to 60 if you drive no faster than 70-75 on the motorway. Best was 68, when on a deliberate fuel saver and only doing 50-55 on rural roads. Economy tip-use higher range of recommended tyre pressures. Noisy when cruising on the motorway?

Yes,the tyres are expensive (Front replaced at 21,ooo) but these items have gone up a lot for everything. I love it, only thing that rattles is the junk I carry about in the many pockets in the car. I`ve got the adaptive lighting and the xenons are great. My second Mk5 Astra 1.6 as I was so pleased with the first one.

It's just coming up to 4 years old and has cost nothing apart from servicing & MOT. Still on original tyres, exhaust, brakes. Nothing has gone wrong in the time I have had it, nippy, economical & reliable. Just had it's second MOT and it passed with flying colours, nothing needed work on at all. Every Vauxhall I have had has been fantastic as have Fords, with no issues. The VAG cars I have had all had minor problems and the French cars were, well, so bad, beyond belief.

Think over all its done its job i'v enjoyed it for the time i'v had it, obviously its not new so when i see a new car i get a soft spot at times thinking i wouldnt mind a change. But what i have hasn't really dated that much compare to some, and some of the new cars dont seem to be any more reliable than what i have. I know whats wrong with mine so can cope with that, where as if i was to invest in a new car and things went wrong i wouldnt know where my confidence would leave me to if i could manage the repair costs and so on.

New Vauxhall Astra

But thats not stopping me from doing my research in the mean time, comparing and contrasting, looking at something suitable for me in the near future for when i decide to change. I personally wouldn't recommend this car, as from day one this car has been nothing but trouble.

At 4 weeks old it had new rear suspension, at 9,000 miles had drive shaft diff seals done, again at 10,500 and again at 12,000 and a further 2 within under 500 miles. Also at 12,000 miles it had the gearbox removed to have rear crank seal replaced, end float seal replaced, rear lights resealed, endless engine management system failures all by the time the car had covered 20,000 miles.

Manual

To this day I'm still having problems with this car and in my opinion I would never buy another Vauxhall Astra again. This car is the worst I have ever owned - my old 2003 Astra van is more reliable than this Astra. The lack of visibilty to the os when road bends to the right is very bad & dangerous. The a pillar obstructs the drivers view causing a bad blind area, especially when approaching junctions, central bollards or pedestrian crossings,or when travelling round right hand curves in the road. You lose sight of approaching vehicles or bikes / pedestrians from your right. I have had dozens of near accidents with this vehicle that dont happen in other cars.

You have to look round both sides of pillar & hope you dont miss anything moving / converging behind it in the process. This alone would stop me buying again what is an otherwise excellent car. Only other issue is boot size. Not good or reliable car.

I bought it in September for £2,500, and first the radiator leaked in gearbox - had to change the radiator and flush the gearbox. Then the gearbox failed, and it could not move!

It had to be towed, and the gearbox changed with multiple pipes breaking during repair - £1,250! Now engine is heating up for no reason and mechanic cannot find the fault.

The AC dies, and condenser needs to be replaced, which I am not doing. It never gave more than 30mpg, and usually between 26-28 (city driving). It has a very high road tax, and I would not recommend this car to anyone. It appears that gm pulled all the development money when designing this car, looks awful, interior trim randomly drops off here and there, exterior parts like wheel arch liners held on with 2 clips so that puddles rip them out and the liner catches on the suspension. Cruise control has never worked, vauxhall are aware of the problem but no fix yet. Faulty brake light switch causing a short in the circuit and the lights to flicker. Faulty body control module causing brake lights to come on and stay on even with keys out and locked draining the battery, now an official recall.

I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!! It gets from a to b and what you see is what you get, like any old car things need replacing from time to time i.e brakes. Petrol consumption is equal to a 4x4 which only has 3 gears. I drive as economic as possible and it eats petrol. I don't mind paying extra for the fuel but it's not even a fun ride. And the only thing you can overtake well is a milk float.

I currently hate my car as in the same 4 minutes my wing mirror fell off, my ariel snapped off and my speakers blue. Acceleration is good in comparison to my old car, a citroen xsara estate v reg, which handles like a barge. Fairly reliable and cheap to run in terms of insurance, diesel and car tax costs for the economy and performance it provides Very disappointed that the turbo needed replacing after only 21000 miles when it was only for years old. The front passengers door also repeatedily leaks in through the rubbers dispite it being looked at on three occassions. It was out of warranty on all three occassions. The turbo replacement costs for a vauxhall unit fitted by a vauxhall mechanic was £881 as it was just out of warranty. After writing and complaining a £200 re-imbursement was offered.

For example, 'The chicken came before the egg' and 'Before the egg came the chicken' are two sentences with the exact same meaning, but with the words in a different order. Dlab study guide for usaf.

I bought this car (Astra MK6 10-plate) through Network-Q. I thought it would be reliable since it had been approved by a Vauxhall main dealer. However the gearbox went 1 and half years after I bought it. It's only got 42,000 miles on the clock. The car has been serviced by the main dealer its whole life, however they could never spot the problem and asked me to pay £3,600 to replace the whole gearbox. It's very disappointing that Vauxhall wouldn't recognize the fault and offer any help. I will never buy any car from Vauxhall after this horrible experience.

I bought my astra sxi 1.6 16v as my first car. I've loved every second of driving it, as it has plenty of power and very stable cornering. Despite the astra mk4 being a fairly plain-styled model, the sxi adds nice details such as fog lights and alloys which actually make the car quite attractive. I'm thoroughly pleased with it's practicality and build quality too. My only real niggles are that it is a dirty engine (costing £180 road tax for a 1.6!) And that the 16' alloys cause a jolty ride on badly kept roads. Overall however, it has been a joy to own! This is the first vauxhall I have owned and probably my last.

Vauxhall astra club

Good looking car. Have front and rear parking sensors which are good. Car has been in the garage 9 times in the 6 months I have owned it. Had a clutch change at 22k, fan heater, pulley and traction control sensor, and various other things. Really bad gear change going from 1st to 2nd this seems to be a common problem.

Love the design inside and out and mpg seem quite good for the engine size/car size. Feels nice to drive and very sturdy.
